The U.S. Coast Guard Commandant, Admiral Thad Allen, said that the Coast Guard was facing unprecedented challenges in the variety of tasks it is called upon to execute and the antiquated equipment it is called upon to execute them with.
Adding to that list, LORAN is sticking around...and apparently it is going to be enhanced. The Department of Homeland Security announced that the Coast Guard-run enhanced LORAN or ELORAN is the national backup system to the Global Positioning System or GPS.
And, the U.S. Coast Guard won't be shedding any of its services to the maritime public. It announced that it is continuing the High Frequency (HF) broadcast of weather related news. gCaptain has a pretty good discussion on the topic here.
