Last September, a Coast Guard helicopter crashed during a training mission near the Honolulu airport. Tragically, four Coast Guardsmen were killed. They were: Captain Thomas Nelson (he was posthumously promoted), Lt. Commander Andrew Wischmeier, Aviation Survival Technician First Class David Skimin and Aviation Maintenance Technician 2nd Class Joshua Nichols. Captain Nelson was four years ahead of me at the United States Coast Guard Academy and served as the Executive Officer of the Air Station.
A permanent memorial to the crew is planned at Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point and a fundraiser has begun. The details are noted in the newspaper article, here.
